Data from numerous weather satelites were compiled to produce these magnificent 3D animations that illustrate exactly what happened before, during, and after the storm. where the storm went, and the types of hazards that resulted. Scientists from NASA 's Goddard Space Flight Center have produced an excellent short video that explains both how and where the storm developed. So, how is it that this storm would become one of the most significant global storms in a century? The reality is that the Gulf Coast has still not recovered from that event, and it is likely that it will have lasting effects for decades to come. For some, the evacuation orders became permanent because they had no home to come back to, no jobs to return to, and in many cases, no family to return there with. Once flooded, evacuees who had relocated to high ground were once again confronted with additional evacuation orders. The failed levee systems allowed billions of gallons of rain and seawater to flood hundreds of square blocks of the city and neighboring parishes. To add insult to injury, many of these individuals would experience even more catastrophic impacts when the levees that were built to hold back the sea actually broke. Despite the distance of time from that event, the impacts of that storm are still very real, very raw, and very emotional for the hundreds of thousands of individuals that faced Katrina's storm surge, hurricane-force winds, and heavy rains.
Perhaps you watched or read some of the retrospective news articles about Katrina and her impacts all along the Gulf Coast, and especially in New Orleans. In August 2015, we recognized the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. You will recall from the last module that we explored this region already, so here we will learn just a little bit more and be able to consider why Katrina was so devastating when Neoguri wasn't. Figure 5.8 shows a portion of the mainland shoreline of Biloxi, Mississippi before and after Hurricane Katrina hit the region. Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast region in August of 2005. Although 23 deaths were directly attributed to the storm, "Hurricane Andrew destroyed more than 50,000 homes and caused an estimated $26 billion in damage, making it at the time the most expensive natural disaster in United States history, not to be surpassed until Hurricane Katrina 13 years later," NOAA says.Hurricane Katrina Revisited Hurricane Katrina ComparedĪs mentioned, if Neoguri hit any shoreline in the U.S., the amount of damage may have been much different. 24, 1992, Andrew made landfall in South Miami-Dade County with maximum sustained winds of 165 mph. The majority of the crop damage - about 90% - was due to the high winds while just 10% is attributed to the intense rainfall." Additionally, crops in Mississippi and Alabama took an enormous hit - peach and pecan orchards were completely destroyed, and more than 20,000 acres of corn were flattened. Communities saw homes and buildings damaged or destroyed, fallen trees, and flooded roads. Most of the inland damage was a result of fallen trees and power lines, while damage on the immediate coast was caused by both wind and storm surge. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) says: "The impacts of Hurricane Camille were felt across much of the southeast U.S., especially southeast Mississippi and southwest Alabama. Camille tracked north-northwest across the Gulf of Mexico, becoming a Category 5 the day before making landfall.
More than 250 people were killed, many in Virginia due to massive flooding the storm brought to that state. Hurricane Camille, the second-strongest storm on record to come ashore in the continental U.S., had sustained winds of more than 170 mph when it hit Mississippi in the late evening of Aug.
